Facebook Vs Googleplus
added to clarify: you can of course share any public content you find on google, be it on your profile or any page you operate. this rant below is about the effort it takes to be able to do so. instead of just seeing something in your stream, hit share and put it where you think it should go, you have to go through a lot of extra steps, which should not be necessary. This is different to what your circles are for.
Example: I follow english and german content but I only share English content on my public profile. German content goes out to a limited circle, but I need to those people first and follow them. So I make a page for it: "only german content, curated by Nicole" which people can circle if they are interested in the German content without me having to add them into circles. Now I read my stream of people I follow and find something I want to share on my German page. I have to follow all the steps described below. I cannot share directly into a page from my profile. If you look at the picture again, facebook allows you to choose where to post it (channel) and to whom (lists). _From a producer point of view this is huge. Because as a producer of information, this is very much additional work.
Imagine you have a page here for your hobby, a topic, your blog. You open up your personal stream as you, the person and find something interesting you want to share to that specific page = channel and not your personal profile.
Now a quick task for you. Share a posting in Google Plus and decide which channel this should belong. Not circle of people which you handselected with lots of work, but the channel where other people subscribed to you / your idea / your company / your brand / your project.
You will note:
- you will click share only to realize that this does not work
- You will have to copy the url of what you wanted to share
- change your identity into a page
- find the posting again
- click on share
- share the post
- remember to change back.
Now try the same thing with any posting on Facebook. How many extra steps does it take? See the image below for the difference.
This is the kind of stuff which is basic structures of how something is built. Not having this as an option but to force people through those hoops is like building the house without the basement although you already know you need it. You do not move into the new house until you have it.
Yes, I can share to circles. That is who I select who can read it. It does not allow me to use the channel to send out information based on what the reader said they want to see.
Yes i can go through hoops to get to the goal. But why do I have to?
